Chuck Kruger
Chief Executive Officer
Chuck has over 25 years of experience starting and leading rapidly growing private equity backed healthcare services companies. He is passionate about building and energizing teams, providing world class levels of customer service, and achieving operational and financial excellence.
Prior to joining Akeso, Chuck was the President of Dignity Health GoHealth Urgent Care, which he launched in 2016 and rapidly grew into the largest urgent care provider in San Francisco. Prior to GoHealth, Chuck was the Vice President of Business Development and Operations for Physical Rehabilitation Network (PRN). During his 10 years with PRN he led an aggressive acquisition and de novo initiative, adding and integrating over 125 new outpatient physical therapy clinics in 11 states.
Chuck began his career in investment banking and private equity before his first entrepreneurial venture as the co-founder of a startup which became one of the largest privately held medical products distributors in the country. Chuck holds degrees in both Human Biology and Economics from Stanford University.
Gene Ma, MD
Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Ma graduated from the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. He completed his internship at Stanford School of Medicine and his residency in Emergency Medicine at UC San Diego. He is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, and a Voluntary Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSD.
Dr. Ma has been acknowledged 10 times by his peers as “San Diego Top Doctor” in Emergency Medicine. He has served as Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine and Chief of Staff at Tri-City Medical Center, along with being a proud board member of the Tri-City Hospital Foundation for a decade. He also previously served as Executive Director of Tri-City Emergency Medical Group. Prior to joining Akeso as our Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ma was Chief Executive Officer of WorkPartners Occupational Health Specialists where he has served in both an administrative role in addition to clinical duties. His clinical mantra that is engrained in every one of our clinicians is that “nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care.”
Dr. Ma lives in Carlsbad with his wife, 5 girls, and their dog who is also a girl! (Dr Ma is pretty sure their fish are girls, too)
Hannah Nguyen
Chief Operating Officer
Hannah brings over 20 years of healthcare operations leadership experience to our team. Before joining Akeso, she was most recently the Vice President of Operations for Concentra Urgent Care in the Pacific Region, responsible for the day-to-day operations of over 100+ clinics in California and Hawaii. In this role Hannah successfully lead the operational efforts in transitioning and integrating the centers in California when Concentra acquired U.S. HealthWorks while leading her team in executing key strategic initiatives using a multi-disciplinary, collaborative approach and leveraging employee engagement.
Hannah began her career in occupational medicine when she joined U.S. HealthWorks in 2007, beginning as a Center Manager/Training Manager before progressing to Regional Director of Operations and then Regional Vice President of Operations in the West Region. Passionate about providing the best possible care to patients while improving the overall patient experience and clinical outcomes, Hannah is responsible for the daily operations of all Akeso clinics.
Hannah received her Doctorate in Chiropractic from Southern California University of Health Sciences and her Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences from Chapman University.
Jim D. Thomas
Chief Information Officer
With over 25 years of experience in IT and healthcare, Jim is a passionate and visionary leader who thrives on delivering value through the practice of innovation, architecture, and governance.
Prior to joining Akeso, Jim was the Vice President and CTO at City of Hope, a world-renowned cancer research and treatment center. He was responsible for transforming cancer care and the healthcare industry by enabling best-in-class solutions and capabilities across digital platforms and related technologies. Prior to City of Hope, Jim led Service Management Strategy/Operations for Kaiser Permanente’s National Pharmacy and a similar role with OptumRx/UnitedHealth Group.
Jim resides in Orange County with his wife of 25 years and their two children. Jim holds an MBA from the University of Phoenix along with several technical and healthcare certifications. Jim is also a 5th generation military veteran having served in the United States Marine Corps during the first Gulf War.
Robin Evans
Vice President, Human Resources
Robin has over 20 years Human Resources experience, spanning several facets including leadership, strategic framework for talent and employee relation activities, statutory compliance, deep understanding of industry related issues, DEI, employee engagement and development. Robin’s career spans both financial services and healthcare.
In 2006, Robin joined U.S. HealthWorks as the Corporate and Provider Recruiter in Talent Acquisition. She transitioned and spent the remainder of her tenure in Human Resources and was further promoted to the Senior Director of Human Resources. During her time with U.S. HealthWorks, she directed employee relations, served as a key member for HR matters related to acquisitions resulting in the addition of nearly 65 clinics, led an employee engagement and culture change initiative and continually served as a strategic business partner, working with operational leadership to align HR strategy with the organization’s mission and values. Robin also served as the Executive Director of HR for a nationwide Therapy Services group.
Robin received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Brigham Young University and holds the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) credential.
Josh Nielson
Vice President of Sales
Josh brings over 20 years of Occupational Medicine sales consulting experience to the Akeso team. Before joining Akeso, Josh was the Director of Sales with Concentra, overseeing up to 50 Occupational Medicine Clinics and leading a team of up to 8 Account Executives. Prior to his time with Concentra, Josh was consistently a top 3 producer out of over 50 sales consultants nationwide for U.S. HealthWorks.
Having extensive experience within the acquisition and denovo Occupational Medicine space, Josh has built his career brand around active listening, problem solving and a high level of collaboration with internal and external business partners.
Josh received his Bachelor of Science in Public Administration from Grand Valley State University and a MPA from Western Michigan University with a minor in Healthcare Administration. He has mentored and coached over 30 sales professionals to become better Occupational Medicine Consultants and his core belief is that sales should be fun.
A lifelong learner and lover of cultures, Josh and his wife have a goal to travel to every country in the world.
